Our client’s farm featured historic ‘hop picker huts’, accommodation built specifically for families who travelled to Kent in the summer for hop-picking work in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Our client’s huts had come to the end of their useful life in the 1950’s when hop-picking became modernised. However, she was keen to keep the history of these huts alive and commissioned the rebuilding of the accommodation, delivering four unique homes. Now rented as holiday lets, they keep the history and story of the original huts alive whilst providing modern living accommodation.
Externally, major features include a 60m oak retaining wall which went to 1.5m depth, featuring black corrugated metal cladding and custom guttering. The design of the build gives the illusion of the buildings running uphill, which required a bespoke façade solution.
Internally, the units are contemporary and feature modern finishes including air conditioning plus resin flooring and micro concrete bathrooms for minimal maintenance.
