Engineering Certainty from Foundation to Final Finish.

A home extension is a major structural undertaking that begins long before the first brick is laid. At Morgan & Smith, our expertise starts in the ground. We manage the entire lifecycle of your build—from precision excavation and drainage to the complex “knock-through” and installation of structural steel. By maintaining a clean, highly organised site and adhering to the strictest 2026 Building Regulations, we remove the stress of large-scale construction. We handle the heavy engineering so you can focus on the design possibilities of your expanded home.

Our Consultation Framework: From Concept to Blueprint.

Groundworks & Foundation Engineering

Every successful extension begins beneath the surface. We manage the entire “heavy” phase, from precision excavation and drainage installation to the pouring of foundations that meet 2026 Building Regulations. By handling the groundworks with surgical accuracy, we ensure the new footprint is perfectly level and structurally sound, providing the essential base for the masonry to follow.

Superstructure & Weatherproofing

Once the foundations are set, the “shell” of your extension begins to take shape. Our master bricklayers and carpenters work to raise the walls and pitch the roof, ensuring that new materials—whether matching traditional brick or modern cladding—harmonise with your existing property. We move quickly to install glazing and roofing, making the new structure “watertight” as early as possible to protect the build.

The Structural “Knock-Through”

The most critical moment of any extension is the connection to your original home. We manage the complex structural “knock-through” with extreme care, installing the necessary steel beams (RSJs) to support the upper floors. We use professional dust-screening and temporary partitioning to isolate the construction zone, ensuring your daily life is disrupted as little as possible while we merge the two spaces.

Internal Integration & Final Finishes

With the home opened up, we focus on the “seamless flow.” This includes the “first and second fix” of electrics and plumbing, followed by high-performance insulation and plastering. We pay special attention to floor levels and joinery, ensuring the transition from the old house to the new extension is invisible. We finish with a meticulous snagging walkthrough to ensure your expanded home is flawless.

Home Extension FAQs.

Will the new bricks match my existing house?2026-04-01T10:06:58+01:00

Achieving an “invisible” transition is one of our signatures. We don’t just choose a “similar” brick from a catalogue; we conduct a physical Brick Match on-site. We look at the colour, the texture, and even the “weathering” of your existing masonry. Furthermore, we pay close attention to the Mortar Tint and the Pointing Style (how the cement sits between the bricks). By matching these fine details, we ensure your extension looks like a natural, original part of the property rather than a modern bolt-on.

What is a ‘knock-through’ and is it safe?2026-04-01T10:06:36+01:00

A “knock-through” is the pivotal moment where we remove an existing external wall to merge your old home with the new extension. It is perfectly safe when managed by experts. We use heavy-duty temporary supports (often called “Acrow props”) to hold the weight of your upper floors while we install permanent structural steel beams (RSJs). Our Director personally oversees these critical structural milestones to ensure the load-bearing integrity of your home is never compromised.

How deep do the foundations need to be?2026-04-01T10:06:19+01:00

In 2026, building regulations regarding ground stability are more rigorous than ever. Typically, standard “trench fill” foundations need to be at least 1 metre deep. However, this can increase significantly if your property is built on heavy clay, or if there are large trees nearby whose roots could affect the soil. As part of our service, we manage the site investigation and coordinate with Building Control officers to ensure your foundations are inspected and signed off before a single brick is laid.

Do I need to move out during a home extension?2026-04-01T10:06:05+01:00

In the vast majority of cases, no. We have refined a “phased” construction approach that allows you to remain in your home. We typically build the new “shell” externally first—accessing the site through the garden or side of the house. This keeps the mess and heavy materials outside your living areas. It is only during the final weeks, when we connect the new space to the old, that there is any significant internal disruption. We use professional-grade dust screening and temporary partitions to ensure your kitchen, living rooms, and bedrooms remain clean and usable throughout.
